Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP is a international law firm with over 500 attorneys in California, New York, Washington DC and Shanghai. The downtown Los Angeles office is seeking an experienced Conflicts Manager that will be responsible for managing the employees, resources, and systems for the firm's centralized conflicts-of-interest and background research activities to ensure compliance with and support of ethics rules, policies, and business intake procedures. This is an exempt position reporting to the Office of the General Counsel.
Primary Responsibilities
• With guidance from the Office of the General Counsel, develop, implement, and monitor procedures and mechanisms for the effective creation of conflict reports for both new business intake and lateral attorney hires.
• Coordinate with members of the Office of the General Counsel to address policy and procedural issues related to conflicts and business intake.
• Manage the firm's conflicts database (LegalKey 4.20) including updating and maintaining its accuracy, administering user access/security, and coordinating with internal IT staff, external developers, and vendor user support to resolve issues.
• Develop, review, and update training documentation for conflicts staff and for attorneys and secretaries, as necessary.
• Ensure that appropriate third-party external databases (e.g., Hoovers) for the conduct of both conflicts and background research are properly utilized and that required licenses are maintained.
• Supervise conflicts and background research staff, conduct annual performance evaluations, make salary recommendations, monitor attendance, provide performance feedback and take disciplinary action when appropriate.
• Coordinate with the Records department to address issues associated with business intake.
• Keep current on trends in conflicts-of-interest and risk management, including technical developments/advances, new resources for research, and changes in the regulatory environment.
Qualifications and Experience
• 5+ years law firm conflicts experience.
• 3+ years increasingly responsible supervisory/management experience.
• In-depth knowledge of ethical, legal, and risk management rules and requirements.
• Experience using and administering LegalKey Conflicts software or other similar conflicts applications.
• Experience with workflow or other methods of automated data transfer and approvals for the business intake process.
• Advanced oral and written communications skills.
• Proficiency using on-line research tools such as LexisNexis, Hoovers, and various other business/financial resources.
• Analytical and creative approaches to problem-solving.
Education
• College degree required.
